Otis elevator traction sheave

One interesting feature of this elevator traction sheave is the perforated metal tape that traveled with the ropes. This tape drove the pancake selector (seen earlier) and allowed the controller to measure the cab's position in the hoistway. This was necessary since optical and magnetic sensors were not yet in vogue for this purpose.
