Telephone attendant desk behind front desk
Clearly, with a telephone attendant's console (and a second spare in the corner), this is where the telephone receptionist sat. This hotel marketed nationally and advertised a toll-free number. A note on the desk reads, "there are no 800 calls to guest rooms, reservations only", suggesting that this operator truly did it all handling toll-free, incoming, and outgoing calls.
