Tree tumor bubble

A massive protrusion growing off the middle of the trunk of a birch tree. I am interested to know what does this to trees. When I was younger, a tree in my neighborhood had a growth like this, except the growth was perfectly smooth, uniform, and symmetric. It was quite weird.
