Black fire hydrant
A fire hydrant manufactured by the Kennedy company of Elmira, NY, likely once a typical bold red color, now covered in a thick layer of black paint, indicating that the hydrant is out of service and provides no protection. Despite that arson has been a continuing problem at the Letchworth, the hydrants remain dry, even though local volunteer firefighters have cited lack of working hydrants as a factor in the severity of the fires that have occurred.
