Space reducing guard on hoistway door
This is a most unusual elevator door. A metal sliding grate closes the elevator before movement. But what is this box for? It seems like it would be extremely hazardous in an emergency. Apparently, this was installed because the space between the hoistway door (open, seen here) and the inside car door (or in this case, gate) was large enough to fit a person. Since the elevator had no light curtain to detect objects in this zone, it creates a hazard whereby a person becomes stuck in the space between the doors, and the elevator runs. By having this "space reducing guard", the hoistway door would not close unless there were no object in the way.
